dc.description	Research regarding the application of solar energy techniques intensified in the second half of the twentieth century. In Chile, the mechanical engineer Julio Hirschmann, one of the principal researchers, was born in Bolivia, studied in Germany, and, after he left the Soviet Union, lived in Chile. Hirschmann’s research focused on the physical-chemical side of the energy phenomenon but he also added social and cultural aspects to the techno-institutional complex. Through an archival review and eyewitness interviews, this article offers an initial sketch of the story of the most important researcher in the Chilean solar energy, who has yet to have a biography written about him.Keywords: Engineering – Solar Energy – Chile – Desalination – History of Technology	en-US
dc.description	A mediados del siglo XX en el mundo occidental se intensificóla investigación acerca de las aplicaciones técnicas de laenergía solar. En Chile uno de los actores principales de estaexperiencia fue un ingeniero Mecánico nacido en Bolivia, formadoen Alemania y que, procedente de la Unión Soviéticaen 1937, se arraigó en Valparaíso. Las investigaciones de JulioHirschmann Recht cubrieron los aspectos físico-químicos delfenómeno energético, pero además incorporaron aspectossociales y culturales del complejo tecnoinstitucional.
