El intenso desarrollo de la actividad extractiva del carbón en la cuenca de Lota y Coronel, a partir de mediados del siglo XIX, trajo por consecuencia un masivo proceso de migración e incremento poblacional. Las ciudades del carbón experimentaron un crecimiento urbano rápido y desorganizado, con precarias condiciones de salubridad, higiene y habitación. Al mismo tiempo, asociadas al carbón y al puerto, surgieron muchas otras industrias, que contribuyeron a la degradación ambiental de la región, tanto del aire, como del suelo y el ambiente marino. Si bien la actividad económica produjo riqueza y avance tecnológico, tuvo también esta dimensión sombría que interesa estudiar.Palabras clave: Lota, Coronel, industria, degradación ambiental.The intensive development of the extractive coal activity at the Lota and Coronel basin, beginning in the mid-19 th century, brought about a massive process of migration and population increase. Coal cities experienced a fast urban growth, marred with disorganization and poor health, hygiene and housing conditions. At the same time, many other industries associated to coal exploitation and the port contributed to the environmental degradation of the region, mainly of the air, soil, and marine environment.
