| dc.description | This paper joins the most recent debates on the historiography of communism, trying to nuance prevailing views on the character and makeup of communist membership. It analyzes the internal crisis undergone by Chile ́s Communist Party in 1990, with special emphasis on those sectors who deviated from the official positions held by the party’s leadership. In the context of the downfall of “really existing socialisms”, and the failure of its attempt to bring down the Pinochet dictatorship through a popular insurrection, this political grouping, a major actor within the 20th century Chilean Left, entered a crisis that threatened its very existence. From this article’s stand point, the communist dissidence emerged out of various historical and political roots, highlighting the fallacy of picturing communist parties as monolithic and homogeneous entities. Moreover, the roots of the political capital of those leaders who steered the internal debate, along with the outcome of this confrontation, were pivotal factors for an understanding of the course adopted by Chile’s Communist Party during the 1990s and 2000s.Keywords: Communism- socialism – political dissent – membership – political capital. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo se inserta en los debates sobre la historiografía del comunismo, intentando complejizar la mirada sobre el carácter y composición de la militancia comunista. Aborda la crisis interna que sufrió el Partido Comunista de Chile durante el año 1990, en particular, la caracterización de los sectores disidentes a las posiciones oficiales. En el contexto del fin del socialismo real y el fracaso de su intento por derrocar la dictadura del general Pinochet mediante una insurrección popular, se desencadenó una crisis que puso en jaque la existencia de esta fuerza política, protagonista de la historia de la izquierda chilena en el siglo XX. Desde el punto de vista del artículo, la disidencia comunista respondió a diversas raíces históricas y políticas, demostrando la inexactitud que implica caracterizar a los partidos comunistas como homogéneos y monolíticos. Además, el origen del poder del capital político de los líderes que protagonizaron la disputa interna y le resultado de su confrontación, fue fundamental para comprender la orientación que se impuso en el PC durante la década de 1990 y 2000.
