| dc.description | The Order of the Preachers, also known as Dominican Orderor Dominicans was one of the first religious orders installedin the American colonies in order to spread the gospel andconvert the natives to Catholicism. From the beginning theywere distinguished for their apostolic spirit and defence of thenatives and they were well aware of the favourable attitude ofthe Spanish Crown to them and express their desire to engagein evangelization.The province of Mendoza, as a part of the Cuyo Region, underthe administrative jurisdiction of the Chilean Government,also received religious orders which came from Chile. The firsttwo religious congregations to reach Mendoza were Mercedariosand Dominicans. In 1563 arrived Friars Antonio Perezand Marcos Rengifo from the Order of Preachers and settledin the city of Mendoza, years later founded the first convent ofSanto Domingo Soriano with an annexed literacy school. TheOrder of Preachers installed in the region of Cuyo depended inthe beginning of the Vicariate of Chile and the Dominican Provinceof Peru, until it joined the new Province of St. LawrenceMartyr of Chile. During the following years, according to officialecclesiastical documents and the analyzed bibliography,we observe that the situation of the Order and the Conventwere of prosperity, growth and especially dedicated to evangelizationand religious education of the natives.Keywords: Dominicans, Preachers, evangelization, Mendoza,native. | en-US |
| dc.description | La Orden de los Predicadores, también denominada Orden deSanto Domingo o Dominicos fue una de las primeras órdenesreligiosas, que se instalaron en las colonias hispanoamericanaspara propagar el evangelio y convertir a los nativos a lafe católica. Desde el primer momento se distinguieron por suespíritu apostólico y la defensa de los nativos; conocían perfectamentela favorable actitud de la corona española haciaellos y su deseo expreso por dedicarse a la evangelización.La provincia de Mendoza, como parte de la región de Cuyo ybajo la jurisdicción administrativa de la Gobernación de Chile,recibió a las órdenes religiosas que provenían también deChile. Las dos primeras congregaciones religiosas en llegar aMendoza fueron los Mercedarios y los Dominicos. En el año1563 llegaron los padres Antonio Pérez y Marcos Rengifo dela Orden de los Predicadores y se establecieron en la ciudadde Mendoza, años después fundaron el primer convento deSanto Domingo Soriano con una escuela de primeras letrasanexa. La Orden de los Predicadores instalada en la regiónde Cuyo dependió al comienzo de la Vicaría de Chile y de laProvincia Dominica del Perú hasta que se incorporó a la nuevaProvincia de San Lorenzo Mártir de Chile. Durante los añossiguientes se puede constatar, siguiendo a los documentosoficiales eclesiásticos y la bibliografía consultada, que la situaciónde la Orden y el Convento eran de prosperidad, crecimientoy dedicados con preferencia a la evangelización y a laenseñanza religiosa de los nativos.Palabras clave: Dominicos, Predicadores, evangelización,Mendoza, nativos | es-ES |
