This article deals with the response the Chilean military regi me gave to international isolation and to the solidarity campaign with the opposition abroad, addressing the work done by the Chilean Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), between 1983 and 1988. The main focus is on Chilean diplomacy’s appraisal of German political world’s attitude towards the regime, its assessment of the existing spaces of action, and the relationship-building activity implemented in order to obtain the support of German politicians. The article argues that such initiatives found a response moderately positive from the Federal Government, characterized by a good degree of “understanding” for Chilean arguments. Anyway, this response was very constrained by the strong bond existing between Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s CDU and the Chilean Christian Democracy, as well by the general guidelines of German policy towards Chile, aimed at fostering a democratic transition. In face of this situation, the Chilean regime had to lowerits expectations from the task of obtaining a favorable position to Chile in 1983, to achieve certain neutrality by the German government on the eve of the plebiscite.Keywords: Chilean military regime, Federal Republic of Germany, international isolation, international solidarity cam-paign.Este artículo se interesa por la respuesta del régimen militar al aislamiento internacional y a la campaña de solidaridad con la oposición en el exterior, abordando las labores realizadas en este ámbito por la Embajada de Chile en la República Federal Alemana (RFA), entre 1983 y 1988. Su foco principal serán los análisis de la diplomacia chilena respecto de la actitud del mundo político alemán hacia el régimen, la evaluación de los espacios de acción que existían en tal país y la actividad de relacionamiento implementada con el fin de obtener el apoyo de los políticos germanos. El artículo plantea que tales iniciativas pudieron contar con una respuesta moderadamente positiva, basada en cierto nivel de “comprensión” de los argumentos chilenos por parte del gobierno de la RFA. Sin embargo, esta respuesta estaba fuertemente condicionada por el vínculo que unía a la CDU del Canciller Helmut Kohl con la DC chilena, así como por los lineamientos de una política alemana hacia Chile, cuyo fin último era la promoción de una transición pacífica a la democracia. Frente a tal situación, las expectativas chilenas tuvieron que bajar sensiblemente, pasando del objetivo de obtener una posición favorable a Chile en 1983, al de lograr cierta neutralidad por parte del gobierno alemán en vísperas del plebiscito.Palabras clave: Régimen militar, República Federal Alemana,aislamiento internacional, solidaridad internacional.
