El presente artículo explora el significado cultural de uno delos espacios públicos más representativos del centro de laciudad de Sincelejo, en el Caribe colombiano de comienzosdel siglo XX. Investigación metodológicamente soportada enel análisis documental del archivo de prensa de la ciudad deSincelejo, localizado en la Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia.Se logra dar explicaciones sobre el valor de esta estructuraurbana, como patrimonio de la ciudad. El artículo resume loshallazgos correspondientes a la historia del atrio de la iglesiaSan Francisco de Asís de Sincelejo, en relación a su construccióny al papel preponderante que toma en la vida cotidiana,en especial, cuando se convierte en el escenario para las retretasde la banda militar del Departamento de Sincelejo. Serevisa la manera que estas estructuras urbanas se convierten,en nuevos modelos de espacio público y en ideales de progresopara la ciudad, privilegiando el desarrollo cultural y lacreación de nuevos imaginarios que compiten con el establecimientode la iglesia católica y su hegemonía.Palabras clave: espacio público, atrio, iglesia, retretas, significadocultural, historia urbana.This paper explores the cultural significance of one of themost representative public spaces of the city center of Sincelejoin the early twentieth century. Methodologically supportedresearch on the analysis of the press archive of the city ofSincelejo, located in the National Library of Colombia. Explanationis achieved here on the value of the urban structureas a world heritage city. The paper summarizes the findingsrelated to the history of the atrium of the church San Franciscode Asís de Sincelejo, in relation to its construction andthe important role it takes in everyday life, especially whenit becomes the stage for the retreats of the military band ofthe Department of Sincelejo. We review here how these urbanstructures are converted into new models of public space andideals of progress for the city, emphasizing the cultural developmentand the creation of new imagery that compete withthe establishment of the Catholic Church and its hegemony.Keywords: public space, atrium, church, retreats, cultural significance,urban history.
