| dc.description | In this article I explore Mapuche shamans' (machi) "political" role as attributed by some national Chilean discourses and those of Mapuche resistance movements and how machi's maintain a distinctive understanding of power and action based on the mapuche notion of newen. Newen is a broad notion of power based on relationships with the spirits of humans (living and dead), animals, and places in nature. I look at the ways gendered national discourses and the discourses of Mapuche resistance movements coerce and construct machi and the ways machi appropriate, transform, and contest these images. I also explore machi's diverse interpretations of political power. My interest lies in the ways in which studying gendered representations by and about machi, and especially machi's non-ideological political practices, can contribute to current discussions of power and resistance, agency and structure, and the practice of power itself. I focus not on the community politics in which machi are involved but on machi's public faces in relation to national political figures and Mapuche political leaders such as longko.Key Words: Mapuche, Shaman, Resistance, Politics, Power. | en-US |
| dc.description | En este artículo me centraré en el papel "político" atribuido a los chamanes mapuche (machi) por algunos discursos chilenos nacionales y los de los movimientos mapuche, y en cómo los machi se reservan un espacio y una naturaleza distintivos en su capacidad de acción a partir de la fuerza o el poder: el newen. El newen es un concepto mapuche amplio del poder basado en relaciones con fuerzas de humanos (vivos y muertos), animales y lugares en la naturaleza. Indago sobre cómo los discursos nacionales de género y los discursos de los movimientos de resistencia mapuche coaccionan y construyen a los machi y en las maneras en que los machi hombres y mujeres se apropian, transforman e impugnan estas representaciones de diversas maneras con objetivos específicos. Por otra parte, analizo la diversidad interpretativa de los machi con respecto al poder político. Mi interés radica en cómo el estudio de las representaciones de género por parte de los machi y sobre estos, en particular las prácticas políticas de género de los machi, puede contribuir a los actuales debates acerca del poder y la resistencia, la mediación y la estructura y la práctica del poder en sí.Palabras claves: Mapuche, Machi, Resistencia, Política, Poder. | es-ES |
