| dc.description | Chiloé was an active whaling center since the late eighteenth century, when foreign sailors began whaling in the Golfo del Corcovado. Later, in the twentieth century, the wealth of this area was exploited by whaling companies who set their land stations in its islands. The early presence of foreign whalers in Chiloé, and the local companies, led to the emergence of a “quellonina” whaling tradition. During the decades of 40 and 60, a group of chilotes from Quellón emigrated to Quintay (1943-1967) and El Molle (1956-19675) whaling stations, both of INDUS SA, travel related to the presence of a “quellonina” whaling tradition. In this paper we explore, from ethnography and history, the characteristics of this movement and its participants. | dc.description | Chiloé fue un activo núcleo ballenero desde fines del siglo XVIII, cuando navegantes extranjeros iniciaron la caza de cetáceos en el Golfo del Corcovado. Posteriormente, en el siglo XX, la riqueza de este espacio fue explotada por sociedades balleneras que instalaron sus plantas terrestres en las islas aledañas. La temprana presencia de balleneros extranjeros en Chiloé, así como el funcionamiento de empresas locales, propició el surgimiento de una tradición ballenera quellonina. Durante los años cuarenta y sesenta, un grupo de chilotes originario de Quellón emigró a las plantas balleneras de Quintay (1943-1967) y El Molle (1956-19675), ambas de la Compañía Industrial SA, desplazamientos relacionados con la presencia de dicha tradición ballenera. En este trabajo exploramos, desde la etnografía y la historia, las características de este movimiento y de sus participantes.
