The present work discusses the study of death in the legends of the lacustrine Zone of Michoacán from the social imaginary theory of Cornelius Castoriadis. Those legends express the forms that the communities of Uranden de Morelos and Pacanda Island has built and given their own meaning to death in a procedural and contextual way, built by a common social imaginary, joining the identity character of individuals as well with their own death. These oral narrations of the legends were obtained, transcribed and processed to be studied through a qualitative analysis, particularly the interpretational analysis. At the end of the reflection the oral tradition is considered as a sphere developed in the social imaginary itself, both individually and collectively, while assuming the internalization of meanings around a way of perceiving death.El presente artículo aborda el estudio de la muerte en las leyendas de la Zona Lacustre de Michoacán desde la teoría del imaginario social de Cornelius Castoriadis. Las leyendas expresan las formas en que las comunidades de Uranden de Morelos e Isla Pacanda han construido y significado, de manera procesual y contextual a la muerte, creadas por un imaginario social común, articulando el carácter identitario de los individuos con su muerte. Se obtuvieron narraciones orales de las leyendas a estudiar las cuales fueron trascritas y procesadas mediante un análisis cualitativo, en particular el análisis interpretacional. Al final de la reflexión se considera la tradición oral como ámbito gestado en el imaginario social mismo, tanto en lo individual como en lo colectivo, al tiempo que se asume la interiorización de significaciones en torno a una forma particular de percibir a la muerte.
