| dc.description | This paper deals with the different perceptions of Chilean northern landscapes that arecommonly refered to as the Atacama Desert. The present aboriginal descendants of thepeoples that inhabited these lands throughout millennia conceive and live in this partof the country in different ways as the europeans that first explored these territories,and the modern immigrants, today engaged in the extractive industrial activities that are making the northern cities grow faster than ever. We are interested especially in thelocal peoples that had and have taken the best advantage of the poor natural resourcesin this territory. In this occasion, we will focus our interest on the coastal territories ofAntofagasta Region, characterized by its extreme dryness, with no permanent sources offresh water, in contrast with a great richness of its maritime resources. | en-US |
| dc.description | Hoy se advierten diferentes percepciones sobre el territorio del Norte Grande de Chile;algunas pertenecen a los descendientes de los pueblos originarios de tiempos prehispánicos,otras, corresponden a la narrativa de la gente que escribe sobre el territorio a partir delsiglo XVI, especialmente los extranjeros que lo ocuparon, y también está la percepciónde los mestizos del presente. Unos han construido una vida de esfuerzo y bienestar; losotros se preguntan quién puede vivir en semejante desolación. Se está en definitiva,ante formas de percibir este paisaje muy diferentes y prácticamente irreconciliables. Noobstante, tanto el registro arqueológico como el relato histórico, hacen notar que esteterritorio, a pesar de ser aparentemente casi inhabitable por su extrema aridez, ha sidoíntegramente aprovechado por los habitantes locales desde sus primeros poblamientos.Sobre estas contradictorias bases, nos interesa situar nuestra narración. Nos centraremosen los paisajes del desierto costero, que los especialistas hemos acordado llamar así, comoherramienta de trabajo, por costumbre histórica, narrativa arqueológica, una visiónlejana de un desierto supuestamente intocado y el mar Pacífico. | es-ES |
