In the current global context, wireless communications have become essential. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide an understanding of the technological evolution in the cellular industry, from three case studies of companies: Nokia, Huawei and ZTE. Initially, the paper shows how it has been developing technology for wireless communications. It also highlights the patenting activity as a tangible indicator of R & D activity, particularly of companies under study. The second part of the paper describes the case studies including patenting activity in recent years. Finally, the research presents the similarities and differences between the case studies and the conclusions about patenting activity in the industry.es-ES
