dc.descriptionThe article addresses the issue of women’s representation in electoral legislation, focusing on the latest amendments of Chilean electoral laws. It first examines the conceptual relationship between representative democracy and equality, distinguishing between formal and substantive equality and representation, in order to fully understand the potential impact of electoral laws on women’s representation. A comparative perspective is then offered, showing the current representation of women in Parliaments and reviewing the connection with different features of electoral systems. In this context, gender quotas are analysed as one of the main mechanisms that have been used to increase women representation. Finally, the recent amendments of Chilean electoral law on this issue are presented, in order to anticipate what we can expect for women’s representation in the years to come.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo aborda el tema de la representación femenina en la legislación electoral, enfocándose en las modificaciones más recientes de las leyes electorales chilenas. Primero se examina la relación conceptual entre la democracia representativa y la igualdad, planteando una distinción entre la igualdad y representación formal y sustantiva, con la finalidad de comprender a cabalidad el posible impacto de las leyes electorales sobre la representación femenina. Luego se ofrece una perspectiva comparada, mostrando la actual representación femenina en el Parlamento y revisando la conexión entre las distintas características de los sistemas electorales En este contexto, se analizan las cuotas de género como uno de los mecanismos que se han utilizado para aumentar la representación femenina. Finalmente, se presentan las modificaciones recientes de la ley electoral chilena sobre esta materia, con la finalidad de anticipar lo que se puede esperar para la representación femenina en años futuros.es-ES
