The so-called “Honecker case” is an episode little studied in the internationalist historiography of Chile. It opened a complex diplomatic scenario between Chile, Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), later Russia. The problem involved three countries in an unprecedented situation of International Law, and provoked a long legal and diplomatic negotiation, not free from tensions, within an international system in transformation. The article addresses the tensions that arose in the first phase of this problem, using unpublished chilean diplomatic sources, Patricio Aylwin presidential archive, parliamentary sessions, interviews, and the Chilean and German press of the period.El denominado “caso Honecker” constituye un episodio poco estudiado en la historiografía internacionalista de Chile. Abrió un complejo escenario diplomático entre Chile, Alemania y la Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas (URSS), posteriormente Rusia. El problema involucró a tres países en una situación inédita de Derecho Internacional, y provocó una larga negociación jurídica y diplomática, no exenta de tensiones, dentro de un sistema internacional en transformación. El artículo aborda las tensiones que se presentaron en la primera fase de este problema, utilizando fuentes diplomáticas chilenas inéditas, archivo presidencial de Patricio Aylwin, sesiones parlamentarias, entrevistas, prensa chilena y alemana del período.
