We adopt the perspective of deliberative democracy to analyze the “Dialogues for Peace” between the Mexican Federal Government and the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity. The origin of such exchange was a social movement that demanded the Mexican State to assume responsibility for the humanitarian consequences of President Calderón administration’s war on drugs. Our purpose is to evaluate the contributions of this episode to the strengthening of the deliberative features of politics in Mexico. We will show that this case is meaningful because of the exchange of reasons and justifications that took place between political actors with conflicting positions. This episode, however, also highlights the enduring difficulties that hinder deliberation to become a common and consequential practice in Mexico’s democracy.En este trabajo empleamos una perspectiva deliberativa de la democracia para analizar los “Diálogos por la paz” que sostuvieron el Gobierno Federal y el Movimiento por la Paz, con Justicia y Dignidad. Este intercambio se originó en una movilización social que reclamó al Estado mexicano responsabilizarse por las consecuencias humanitarias del combate al narcotráfico emprendido por la administración calderonista. Nuestro objetivo es evaluar las contribuciones de este episodio al fortalecimiento de las cualidades deliberativas de la política en México. Señalaremos que este caso es significativo porque promovió el intercambio de argumentos y justificaciones entre actores políticos con posturas antagónicas, aunque también ilustra las dificultades que persisten para que la deliberación sea una práctica habitual y consecuente en la democracia mexicana.
