Health variables and quality of life in teachers from a city in northern Brazil

To compare the teaching time, number of classes, body mass index (BMI), physical and men-tal health-variables and quality of life (QoL) among teachers. The sample consisted of 85 tea-chers from both sexes. Primary-Group (PG: n=25; 34.3±5.5 years); Superior-Group (SG n=24 to 36.9±5.1 years) and the Inclusion-Group (IG: n=36 to 38.7±6.03 years). Evaluation question-naires: a. SF-36 for QoL; b. Beck inventory-A (anxiety); c. Inventory-D (depression); d. The Brief Pain Inventory was also used. The teaching time showed statistical differences. The PG group had more time (Δ%=8.9%; p=0.001) compared to other ones. The number of classes showed statistical differences for the PG (Δ%=9%; p=0.01) compared to the SG and IG groups. However, the IMC, anxiety and depression variables showed no differences (p<0.05) between groups. The scores for physical, mental and overall QoL showed health is classified as fair in all groups, but there were no differences (p<0.05). PG teachers have more teaching time and a bigger number of classes compared to the SG and IG groups. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo comparar el tiempo de enseñanza, número de clases, ín-dice de masa corporal (IMC), variables de salud física, mental y calidad de vida (CV) entre maes-tros. La muestra consiste en 85 maestros de ambos sexos: Grupo-Primario (GP: n=25; 34.3±5.5 años); Grupo-Superior (GS n=24 a 36.9 ± 5.1 años) y Grupo-inclusión (GI: n=36 a 38.7±6.03 años). Los cuestionarios de evaluación: SF-36 para CV; Beck inventario-A (ansiedad); Inventa-rio-D (depresión); se utilizó también el Brief Pain Inventario. El tiempo de enseñanza mostró di-ferencias estadísticas, el GP tenía más tiempo (Δ%=8.9%; p=0.001). El número de Clases mostró diferencias estadísticas para GP (Δ%=9%; p=0.01) en comparación con GS y GI. IMC; Ansiedad y Depresión no presentaron diferencias (p<0.05) entre grupos. Los escores para salud física, men-tal y CV total mostraron clasificación regular para todos los grupos, pero no hubo diferencias (p<0.05). Los maestros del GP tienen más tiempo de enseñanza y más clases en comparación con los dos grupos.
