Abdón Cifuentes, a prominent figure of the second half of the XIX century, defended the independence of the Church from the secular State, and fougth for social progress through education. He promoted technical training for both the popular and middle class sectors and for women with the intention to include them into the work force. His educational approaches can be seen through the educational development in the XX century.Abdón Cifuentes, figura altamente representativa en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, defendió la independencia de la Iglesia frente al Estado laicista,y luchó por el progreso social a través de la educación. Concibió a Chile como un país industrial, y promovió la capacitación técnica, en particular para los sectores medios y populares, y para la mujer, a fin de incorporarlos al mundo laboral.  Sus planteamientos educacionales pueden apreciarse en el desarrollo educacional del siglo XX.
