Aunque existe una bibliografía relativamente abundante sobre el Instituto Pedagógico, los textos que construyen su análisis a partir del examen de fuentes primarias son escasos. Más aún, aquellos textos difieren poco entre sí y suelen ser fundamentalmente descriptivos. Este artículo muestra que al retratar el Instituto Pedagógico, reproducen un guión fundamental.  Además, examina algunos aspectos que resaltan tras investigar fuentes primarias, en particular que, si bien fue creado en 1889 fundamentalmente para entregar a los profesores secundarios formación formal –pedagógica y disciplinar– y mejorar así la calidad de los docentes, hubo motivaciones complementarias.  Se propone que de éstas la más relevante fue crear una institución destinada, en primer término, a las provincias en un espíritu centralizador, esto es, para homogeneizar métodos y contenidos a nivel nacional. What is more, those texts are not very different from another and usually they are basically descriptive. This article shows that in describing the Instituto Pedagogico they follow a basic script. Furthermore it explores one of the aspects that stand out after investigating primary sources. While it was created in 1889 with the basic purpose of improving the quality of the secondary teachers by giving them both a pedagogic and disciplinar formal education, there were also complementary motivations. It is proposed that the most relevant of these was to create an institution aimed in the first place at the provinces in a centralizing spirit, that is, to homogenize methods and contents at a nationwide level.Key words: Instituto Pedagogico, teacher training, centralization, consistency,provinces.
