| dc.description | Este artículo hace referencia a las etnias aymaras de la provincia de Iquique, los Islugas y los Cariquimas, e intenta describir y adelantar algunas hipótesis respecto de sus primeros contactos con el proceso de chilenización que, de un modo compulsivo, comienza a vivirse en la región de Tarapacá desde 1910 en adelante. Se hace especial mención a la escuela (pública) como uno de los factores principales de la chilenización o, en otras palabras, “de la reproducción cultural de la ideología vencedora de la sociedad chilena en las comunidades indígenas de la región”.

This article refers to the aymara ethnic groups of the province of Iquique, the Islugas and the Cariquimas, and intends to describe and put forward some hypotheses with respect to their process of chilenizacion which, in a progressive manner, has begun in the Tarapacá region since 1910 on.A special reference is made to public education as one of the main factors contributing to this “chilenización” process or, in other words, to “the cultural spread of the chilean society’s leading ideology in the indigeneous communities of the region”.
