| dc.description | En este artículo se analiza Tarapacá, novela editada en 1904 en Iquique, desde un punto de vista, que enfatiza los componentes ilustrados de la cultura obrera de principios de siglo. Se hace hincapié en los temas de la moral y de la religión, y de, cómo el autor, a través de su personaje central, Juan Pérez, elabora la solución a los problemas de los trabajadores, a través de la destrucción de las salitreras.

In this paper, Tarapacá, a novel published in 1904 in Iquique, is analysed from a viewpointwhich stresses the illustrated components of the working class culture that existed in this part of Chile at the beginning of the century. Issues like moral and religion have been focused. Stress is also laid on how the author, by means of the main character of the book, named Juan Pérez, figures out the solution to the workers’ problems, through the destruction of the nitrate mining centers.
