| dc.description | Este artículo aborda aquella parte desconocida de la biografía del ex presidente peruano, sobre su vida en Tarapacá, Guillermo Billinghurst Angulo.
Ahonda en los aspectos personales de la biografía de este personaje y no los exclusivamente políticos; se destacan sus relaciones familiares, sociales y empresariales, y su estatura intelectual, que le llevó a transformarse en su época en un pro-hombre de Tarapacá y del Perú. Se pone de relieve su aporte en el análisis del ciclo salitrero y sus estudios realizados sobre la geografía física y humana de Tarapacá.
Este trabajo es, en definitiva, un rescate histórico de una figura continental, en su calidad de historiador, empresario, político e intelectual, injustamente olvidada, tanto por Perú como por Chile, por situarse –tanto temporal como espacialmente- en medio de un conflicto internacional entre estos países. Billinghurst intentó infructuosamente solucionar, desde sus cargos públicos y desde su prestigio personal, el conflicto por las “cautivas” entre Perú y Chile.

This article focuses on that unknown part of Guillermo Billinghurst Angulo’s biography. A former Peruvian president who lived in Tarapacá.
It elaborates on the personal aspects of this man’s biography and not the exclusively political ones; it emphasizes his family, social and economic relationships as well as his intellectual stature that transformed him into a highly recognized person of Tarapacá and Perú in his time. The article intends to put in its right perspective his contribution in the analysis of the saltpeter cycle and the studies carried out to describe and analyze the physical geography and human aspects of Tarapacá.
This work is, in conclusion, a historical rescue of a continental figure, as a historian, entrepeneur, politician and intellectual, unjustly forgotten, both by Peru and Chile, for being involved in an international conflict between these countries. Billinghurst tried unfruitfully to solve, from his public position and from his personal prestige, the conflict of the “captured ones” between Peru and Chile.
