In spite of the fact that the family is the first socializing agency during childhood, at present the family does not play this role alone because other agents, such as the school, share this important function. Studies about the relationship between family and school are scarce especially in rural areas. Thus, it was important to carry out a descriptive-comparative study about the topic in two elementary schools in different rural areas. The information was obtained from the application of various interviews to mothers, teachers and students from 1st to 6th grade as well as from schools’ documents and complemented with ethnographic observations. The results show that families as well as students give great importance to school and have high educational expectations. The teachers‘ perceptions, however, are different. A high percentage of the teachers of one of the schools studied believe families do not perceive school as important and do not participate in school activities.A pesar de que la familia es el primer agente socializador durante la niñez, actualmente ésta ya no desempeña el rol socializador totalizante, pues otros agentes han asumido muchas de sus funciones. Uno de estos agentes es la escuela. Debido a que existen pocos estudios acerca de la relación familia y escuela en los sectores rurales, se realizó un estudio descriptivo-comparativo sobre la temática, en dos escuelas rurales de la Región de Valparaíso. Para obtener información requerida se aplicaron entrevistas a las madres, a los profesores/as y a una muestra de niños/as que cursaban de 1º a 6º básico, se revisaron documentos y se hicieron observaciones etnográficas. Los principales resultados indican que tanto la familia como los niños y niñas estudiados, le atribuyen gran importancia a la escuela y tienen altas expectativas educacionales. La percepción de los profesores y profesoras es, empero, diferente ya que un alto porcentaje de éstos señala que la familia le da poca importancia a la escuela. Esta falta de acuerdo, se observó también en relación con la motivación de la familia en la escuela, ya que no participa en sus actividades.
