This work analyses Jorge Edwards' novel El origen del mundo (1996). It starts by placing the Chilean writer in the setting of the generation of the 50s, describing his literary influences and the importance the city has in his writings. The novel, built as a story of love and intrigue, encompasses themes which are very important for Edwards' narrative such as the loss of illusions, old age and the failure of many intellectuals. At the same time it enacts a theme which is present in all his writings: the representation of reality.Este trabajo aborda el análisis de El origen del mundo (1996), novela del escritor chileno Jorge Edwards. Para ello, se parte de la colocación del autor en el marco de la generación del 50, de sus deudas literarias y del fuerte peso que la ciudad tiene en su escritura. La novela, construida como un relato de amor y de intriga, encierra temas claves para la narrativa de Edwards, tales como la pérdida de las ilusiones, la vejez y el fracaso de muchos intelectuales. Al mismo tiempo, pone en escena un tema que rodea a toda su producción: la representación de la realidad.
