Chile did not escape the ideological confrontation between the USA and the URSS. The writers of newspaper editorials took sides in the conflict. The present paper explores the image of both superpowers from the perspective of the left-wing press, represented by El Siglo. A corpus of 45 editorials and opinion pieces is examined, adapting categories from analyses of racist and sexist discourse. Ideology is examined regarding its role in the structuring of the texts. Two major semantic strategies stand out: accusation and positive self-presentation. The results suggest that the categories from racist and sexist discourse studies must be re-defined for a more coherent view of ideologically-based newspaper texts. A tentative identification of the readers most likely to be addressed by the articles in the corpus is also proposed. Esta se manifestó claramente en editoriales y artículos de opinión. 45 textos de El Siglo entre 1957 y 1962 fueron examinados según criterios derivados del análisis del discurso racista y sexista. Se discute el papel de la ideología en la estructuración textual. Dos estrategias semánticas aparecen como mayoritarias: la acusación y la autopresentación positiva. La investigación indica que las categorías discursivas observadas en la discriminación deben ser redefinidas para presentar una visión más coherente de la estructura de textos periodísticos con base ideológica. La evidencia textual también permite proponer una hipótesis acerca de los posibles lectores hacia los cuales van dirigidos los artículos y editoriales. El estudio es parte de un proyecto mayor sobre la imagen de las superpotencias desde la perspectiva chilena.
