Next to verb tense, the category of grammatical aspect is, perhaps, the one that has seen more ink flow in the description of the verb over the last two centuries. However, the descriptive potential of the concept has been diminished by the distortions it has suffered from its creation until the present. Having emerged as a term in the field of Slavic languages to account for a linguistic reality that only materialised formally in them, it was then attempted to transfer its essence to others whose functioning evaded explanation through the new construct. This fact motivated the terminological neonate to find a gap in the description of systems that rejected it: either transposing its distinctive sign to other disciplines such as lexicon or syntax, or using the extralinguistic context as an excuse. As a result, such a concept, manipulated by the methodological principles of different schools, has lost descriptive authenticity. In this paper, the origins, causes and repercussions that the new verbal category has had on the grammatical description of Spanish are therefore analysed, while at the same time its future as an explanatory motor of the verb is assessed.Junto al tiempo verbal, la categoría aspecto es, quizá, la que ha visto correr más tinta en la descripción del verbo durante los últimos dos siglos. Sin embargo, el potencial descriptivo del concepto que la cubre se ha visto mermado por las tergiversaciones que este ha sufrido desde su creación hasta la actualidad. Surgido como término en el ámbito de las lenguas eslavas para dar cuenta de una realidad lingüística que solo cristalizaba formalmente en ellas, se quiso luego trasladar su esencia a otras cuyo funcionamiento rehuía ser explicado a través del nuevo constructo. Este hecho motivó que el neonato terminológico encontrara forzadamente un hueco en la descripción de sistemas que lo rechazaban: bien extrapolando su seña distintiva a otras disciplinas como el léxico o la sintaxis, bien utilizando como excusa el contexto extralingüístico. De resultas, tal concepto, manoseado por los principios metodológicos de diferentes escuelas, ha llegado a perder autenticidad descriptiva. En este trabajo, se analizan, pues, los orígenes, las causas y las repercusiones que la nueva categoría verbal ha tenido en la descripción gramatical del español, a la vez que se advierte de su futuro como motor explicativo del verbo.
