The present work describes the lexical development in children, whose ages range from three to six; these children belong to the Biobío and Metropolitan areas. The sample, 1393 children, is part of four research projects, funded by the National Research Foundation. The TEVI was used twice in the year, at the beginning and the end of the school year. As a result, it was observed that the great majority did not reach the norm established by the TEVI, that children improved between the two measurements, and that the attendance to some preschool center favored the children’s lexical development. Besides, the mean in boys was significantly higher as compared to girls. Finally, some significant associations were established considering some variables of the children’s families.El presente trabajo describe la comprensión léxica de niños cuyas edades fluctúan entre los 3 y 6 años, provenientes de las Regiones del Biobío y Metropolitana. Las muestras, que reúnen a 1.393 niños, son parte de cuatro proyectos Fondecyt, tres finalizados y uno en curso. Para evaluar la comprensión léxica, los niños fueron medidos a través del TEVI, en dos oportunidades, con un lapso de seis meses. Como resultado se obtuvo que la gran mayoría de los niños se encuentra bajo la norma; que se produce un avance significativo entre la primera y segunda medición, que la asistencia a un centro educativo influye positivamente. Además, se detectó un promedio mayor en la comprensión léxica de los niños varones frente a las niñas. Finalmente, se detectaron algunas asociaciones significativas con variables estudiadas de las familias.
