dc.description	This paper indends to make an analysis of the novel Cumandá of the ecuadorian writer Juan León Mera. Certain opposite pairs as nature/agriculture, civilization/barbarism, and Christian/no Christian are especially analyzed. Thoughts about these topics try to identify the autor's social and political ideology on both narrative and plot levels. On the other hand, this leads to review and question traditional definitions of "indianism" and the usual characteristics given to Hispanic American romanticism. Hypotheses about this last theme demand paying attention to the configuration of the heroes of the novel, developed through a comparison with Goethe's Werther.	en-US
dc.description	Este trabajo procura hacer un análisis de la novela Cumandá, del ecuatoriano J.L. Mera. Ello supone un recorrido que privilegia ciertos pares de oposición, a saber: naturaleza/agricultura, civilización/barbarie, cristianismo/no cristianismo. Las reflexiones en torno a estos puntos pretenden arrojar luz sobre la ideología (política, social) que sostiene el autor, tanto a nivel narrativo como argumental. Por otra parte, esto conduce a revisar las definiciones tradicionales de "indianismo" y las características atribuidas habitualmente al romanticismo hispanoamericano. Las hipótesis referidas a este último tema exigen prestar atención a la configuración de los héroes en la novela, cuestión que se desarrolla a través de la comparación con el Werther, de Goethe.	es-ES
