A confrontation between the Chilean government and the powerful private mining companies that work copper mines ended in 2004. The discussion about a law that wanted to tax them was widely known through the dailies. It in necessary to find a name for the payment made to the government for the exploitation of mines that belong to the whole country. In linguistic terms three possibilities are present: two patrimonial ones, that is to say, canon and prerogative, and one anglicism, royalty. The use of this concepts is present in Chilean Spanish taking into account and original data base: an integral corpus of Chilean Spanish and he records of texts from the Real Academia Española: Crea and Corde.En el año 2004 culminó un enfrentamiento entre el Gobierno de Chile y las poderosas compañías mineras privadas que explotan el cobre. La discusión por un proyecto de ley que pretendía gravarlas alcanzó una gran difusión a través de la prensa. Se hace necesario denominar el pago que debe hacerse al Estado en compensación por la explotación de las minas que pertenecen a todo el país. En el acervo lingüístico se ofrecen tres posibilidades: dos patrimoniales, canon, regalía y un anglicismo, royalty. Se sigue su uso en el español de Chile aprovechando una base de datos original: el Corpus Integral del Español de Chile y los registros de textos de la Real Academia Española: Crea y Corde.
