In Spain, medicines are sold with a leaflet containing directions for use. These instructions are written specifically for the patient and should include all the important information the consumer must know about the product. Most citizens cannot understand the contents of these instructions because they are written in technical, imprecise and ambiguous language. This paper analyzes the discourse of these directions from a genre analysis theoretical framework in order to determine its structure and verify the power relation that may exist between writers and readers of these texts.En España, los medicamentos de uso humano se venden acompañados de un folleto explicativo llamado prospecto. Los prospectos van dirigidos al usuario y en ellos debe aparecer toda la información importante que el consumidor debe saber sobre el medicamento. Gran parte de los ciudadanos no comprende el contenido de los prospectos por su lenguaje técnico, impreciso y ambiguo. En este trabajo se realiza un estudio de este tipo de texto desde la perspectiva del análisis de géneros con el fin de determinar, en un primer lugar, su estructura para, posteriormente, comprobar si en el discurso de los prospectos queda reflejada una relación de poder entre emisor y receptor.
