This article analyses the transformations in land transport during the period 1845-1870 in Chile and Southern Australia. The use of oxen and mules, carts and muleteers as the main means of transport remained important despite the introduction of the railway opportunity costs and the heavy investment demanded by the development of a modern infrastructure meant that traditional means of transport were a viable alternative. Through the analysis of business records about the transport of minerals from foundries to ports this article endeavors to study the actors and their preference for traditional means of transportation.El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la evolución del transporte terrestre durante el impacto de la minería de Swansea en Chile y Australia del Sur en el siglo XIX. El uso de bueyes y mulas, carretas y arrieros, como medio de transporte y oficio respectivamente, se mantuvieron pese a la irrupción del ferrocarril y la centralidad del transporte marítimo. Los costos de oportunidad y gastos de infraestructura hicieron durante el período descrito más deseable estas formas de transporte sobre las más modernas. A través del registro documental de la movilización de minerales desde las fundiciones hacia los puertos, se estudiarán las motivaciones empresariales y a los actores protagonistas que hicieron del transporte terrestre tradicional una opción rentable en el siglo XIX.
