AbstractIn this contribution we analyze the long term impact that nitrate wealth brought on both Chilean economy and politics. Using an analytical model based on the impact that an increase in the endowment of natural resources would have on oligarchic, unequal and exclusive societies, we verify that the incorporation of the nitrate territories of the “big north“, ensued from the War of the Pací c, not only would have had consequences on the increase of the economic resources of Chile, but in addition it provoked a change in the keys of the economic and political behavior of the power elite, accentuating his rentier features. We try to prove this af rmation analyzing a) the modernization effect of the economic policies of the government, b) the intensity of repressive actions conducted by the Chilean State and, c) the relevance that rent capture, utilizing the State, acquired for the elite. Keywords: Chile, natural resources endowments, oligarchy, modernization, repression, taxes.es-ES
