In the first section, this article revises certain considerations that supported art criticism in Chile during the first half of the 20th century. It analyses certain biases that characterized the critical discourse of the period, influenced by exogenous determining factors. The objective is to show how art criticism focuses more on the circumstances and contexts, rather than on the analysis of the aesthetic text itself. It refers to authors such as Ricardo Richon Brunet and Nathanael Yánez Silva. The second part examines the gravitating presence of the Spaniard, Antonio Romera, in Chile, who became the theoretical organizer of the history of national painting. Some key aspects of his theoretical approaches are analysed.Este artículo revisa, en su primera parte, algunas de las consideraciones que fundamentaron la crítica de arte en Chile durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Examina algunos sesgos que caracterizan al discurso crítico de la época, mediatizado por condicionantes exógenas. Se intenta demostrar aquí cómo la crítica de arte atiende más bien a las circunstancias y los contextos, por sobre un análisis del texto propiamente estético. Se hace referencia a autores tales como Ricardo Richon Brunet y Nathanael Yáñez Silva. en la segunda parte se examina la presencia gravitante en Chile del crítico español Antonio Romera, a quien se le confiere el estatus de organizador teórico de la historia de la pintura nacional. Se analizan algunos ejes de sus planteamientos teóricos.
