The present work approaches the importance of the photographic staging as the accurate presentation of the elite and its modernity project in Latin America, in the midst of a continuing process of the model established by the European tradition. One of the most effective discourses in order to achieve this aim is the Venezuelan Manuel Antonio Carrefio's Handbook of Urbanity and Good Manners (Manual de urbanidad y buenas maneras). The portrait photograph joins the bourgeois compliance that fulfills concrete social needs which are at the service of the national conscience and the 'good citizen'. El presente trabajo aborda la importancia de la puesta en escena fotográfica como  presentación exacta de la élite y su proyecto de modernidad en América Latina, en  medio de un proceso de continuación del modelo establecido por la tradición europea. Uno de los discursos más eficaces para este fin lo constituye el Manual de urbanidad y buenas maneras del venezolano Manuel Antonio Carreño. La fotografía de retrato se une a la complacencia burguesa que resuelve necesidades sociales  concretas puestas al servicio de la conciencia nacional y del 'buen ciudadano'.
