Between Signifier and Signified: Some Crossroads within Susan Sontag’s Work

| dc.description | This article analyzes two of Susan Sontag’s most notorious essays —“Against interpretation” (1964) and Illness as Metaphor (1978)— to explore its argumentative lines and its ways of interweaving the different thoughts and their implicit ideas. In both texts it is possible to recognize a certain iconoclastic gesture, consisting in going, from the literary essay, against interpretation, on the one hand, and against metaphor, on the other. The following reflections explore not only the parallelisms, but also and more importantly, the differences between both texts, and the gestures involved in them. | dc.description | En este artículo se revisan dos de los ensayos más célebres de Susan Sontag —“Contra la interpretación” (1964) y La enfermedad y sus metáforas (1978)— para recorrer sus líneas argumentativas, sus formas de trenzar el pensamiento y sus ideas implícitas. Reconociéndose en ambos un cierto gesto iconoclasta al ir desde el ensayo literario en contra de la interpretación, por un lado, y contra la metáfora por el otro, las siguientes reflexiones se preguntan por los paralelismos, pero también, y sobre todo, por las diferencias entre ambos textos y los gestos implicados en ellos. Si Sontag en “Contra la interpretación” aboga por el significante, suspendiendo el significado y tachando de conservador y autoritario su persecución, en La enfermedad y sus metáforas puede reconocerse la necesidad de restaurar un significado. | es-ES |
