Inside the history of railroads in Chile, there is one prior stage to its exploitation: the construction of railways. In this, a new popular character was created, of peasant origins, who became a worker: the carrilanos, people that headed a series of violent episodes that brought them a bad reputation. Theobjective of this article is to get to know who these people were; therefore we have used the information available in the local press and from trials filed in the courts of Concepción. The results show the actions of these people: at times very violent, where they developed both as an individual andas a group, and with consequences that implied a level of destruction, and their almost unprecedented death in the affected localities by the presence of these subjects while the construction of the railroad tracks lasted (1869 - 1874), in the towns and villages where the Talcahuano - Chillán branch train waslater circulated.En la historia del ferrocarril en Chile, existe una etapa anterior a su explotación: la de construcción de las vías férreas. En ella se creó un nuevo sujeto popular, de origen campesino, pero que se transformó en obrero: los carrilanos, personajes que protagonizaron una serie de altercados violentos que lesallegaron una muy mala fama. El objetivo del presente artículo es dar a conocer quiénes eran estas personas, para lo cual nos hemos valido de la información existente en la prensa local y en juicios entablados en los tribunales de justicia de Concepción. Los resultados demuestran su accionar, a vecesmuy violento, el cual desarrollaban tanto de forma individual como grupal, teniendo consecuencias que implicaron un nivel de destrucción y muerte casi inédito en las localidades afectadas mientras duró la construcción de las vías férreas (1869 – 1874) en los pueblos y villas por donde más tarde circuló el tren del ramal Talcahuano – Chillán.
