The article deals with the adaptation of the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAP), an instrument created in the United State to detect the risk of physical child abuse which is being carried out in Chile. After describing the Inventory and examining the variables that literature on the subject has associated with risk factors of child abuse –related both to abuser parent and abused child as well as family and social contexts-, the elaboration of an extended version of the original instrument is explained. This instrument was tested on a pilot sample of 56 persons drawn from both a low socioeconomic stratum and a group of university students. Whereas the distribution of the score obtained at the CAP by the university group was similar to the one found in the United States, that of the low socioeconomic group was different. The majority of the latter obtained scores which in the United States would be considered as indicators of child abuse. This finding might be due to the fact that many of the items of the Inventory could reflect, in the case of Chile, not an indicator of risk of child abuse but, rather, some cultural characteristics associated with low income populations. At present, the extended version is being applied to a sample of 120 cases. The analysis of the items and the instrument will follow in order to propose a revised version for Chile.Este artículo da cuenta de la adaptación que se está llevando a cabo en Chile del Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAP), un instrumento creado en Estados Unidos para detectar el riesgo de maltrato físico infantil. Después de describir el Inventario y examinar las variables que la literatura sobre el tema ha asociado como factores de riesgo y maltrato físico infantil -relacionadas tanto con el sujeto maltratador y el niño maltratado como con los contextos familiar y social-, se explica la elaboración de una versión ampliada del instrumento original. El instrumento fue probado en una muestra piloto de 56 personas, tanto de nivel socioeconómico bajo como estudiantes universitarios. Mientras la distribución de los puntajes del CAP del grupo universitario fue similar a la obtenida en Estuados Unidos, la del grupo de nivel socieconómico bajo fue diferente. Este último, en su mayoría, obtuvo puntajes que en Estados Unidos se hubieran considerado como indicadores de maltrato infantil. Este hallazgo puede deberse al hecho que muchos de los ítemes del Inventario pueden reflejar, en el caso de Chile, no maltrato infantil sino más bien algunas características culturales asociadas con poblaciones de escasos recursos. En la actualidad, la versión  ampliada está siendo aplicada a una muestra de 120 casos, después de lo cual se hará un análisis de los ítems y del instrumento con el objeto de promover una versión revisada para Chile.
