dc.descriptionWe are currently within a globalized world where real value is located on the capacities of each person to handle information in an efficient way. Quite differently from past decades, it is now clear for societies the need to assure and promote, not only reading and writing abilities, but most of all competencies necessaries in order to adequately manage written information during daily activities (Literacy). This article attempts to explain the term literacy, proposing a translation, and analyzing different aspects involved in this concept. The developmental process of this competence is discussed, identifying its strategic nodes: intentional mediation, the mediator, and the literacy context. The role of education in the development of this process in Chile is analyzed, concluding that literacy promotion requires competent adults, and this is a task not only of the educational field, but also of the labor and civic environments. All these social areas together, should face educative resource inequalities still existing in this country, that lessens opportunities for the poorer sectors of the population.en-US
dc.descriptionHoy estamos insertos en un mundo globalizado donde lo que vale es la capacidad de los sujetos de manejar información de maner eficiente y precisa. De este modo a diferencia de décadas anteriores, se hace patente la necesidad de las sociedades de asegurar y promover, no sólo el saber leer y escribir, sino ante todo la capacidad de manejar información escrita de manera funcional en la vida cotidiana (Literacy). Este artículo intenta una explicación del término literacy, proponiendo una traducción, y analizando diferentes aspectos implicados en este concepto. Se discute el proceso a través del cual esta competencia se desarrolla, identificando sus nudos estratégicos: medicación intencionada, mediador, contexto alfabetizador. Se analiza el papel del ámbito educativo en este proceso de desarrollo en Chile, concluyendo que la promoción de la "literacidad" requiere adultos competentes lo que no sólo es una tarea de la educación, sino también del ámbito laboral y cívico. Estos ámbitos de la sociedad, en conjunto, deben hacer frente a la inequidad de recursos educativos que aún existe en este país, y que menoscaba las oportunidades de los sectores de menores recursos económicos.es-ES
