The present article synthesizes the crucial aspects of the use of memory as a criterion for defining personal identity. In first place, Locke's view of identity is sketched, including his definition of person, the participation of consciousness in hís doctrine and the way in which it relates to memory. Futhermore, Reid 's c1itic is examined, which basically includes the fundamental elements in terms of which the objection to the Lockean pro posa! is structured, and through its behalf, to ali those doctrines that in one way or another assess memory as a necessary and / or sufficcient criterion for personal identityEl presente artículo sintetiza los aspectos más esenciales del empleo de la memoria como criterio para definir la identidad personal. Primeramente se delimita el enfoque fundado por Locke; se incluye su definición de persona, la participación que tiene la conciencia en su doctrina y la forma en que ésta se concatena con la memoria.  Luego se reseña la crítica efectuada por Reid, que mayoritariamente, incluye los elementos principales en torno a los cuales se ha estructurado la objeción al planteamiento lockeano y, por su intermedio, a todas aquellas doctrinas que de una u otra forma recurren a la memoria como criterio necesario y/o suficiente de la identidad personal
