| dc.description | Findings from a study that explored maternal conceptualizations of child neglect in a sample of 114 low-SES Chilean mothers are reported. Participants responded to an open-ended question about the definition of child neglect, and completed a self-report questionnaire of parental opinions regarding the adequacy of different child care situations (CCSQ. Klockner, 1994). Qualitative analyses of maternal conceptualizations of child neglect were grouped into six categories based on the emphasis the definition placed on one of the following aspects of neglect: child's needs, parental omission, responsibility, known risk, causes, and developmental consequences for the child. Exploratory factor analysis of the CCSQ yielded three factors representing safety and sanitary conditions, supervision and discipline, and expression of affection in the interaction with the child. Findings are discussed in light of the available literature on the definition of neglect. Implications of current findings for the development of culturally informed definitions of child neglect for prevention, treatment, and research programs are discussed. | en-US |
| dc.description | Se refieren los hallazgos de un estudio realizado en Santiago cuyo prop6sito fue explorar las definiciones parentales de negligencia y las opiniones acerca del cuidado de niños pequeños. La muestra qued6 constituida por 114 madres de hijos preescolares pertenecientes al NSE medio-bajo, que respondieron una pregunta abierta sobre negligencia infantil y un cuestionario sobre opiniones parentales. Las definiciones entregadas por las madres fueron agrupadas en 6 categorías de acuerdo al componente más prominente de la definición-necesidades del niño, omisi6n de cuidados, responsabilidad, conocimiento del riesgo, causas, y consecuencias sobre el desarrollo. El análisis factorial exploratorio de las respuestas al cuestionario de opiniones parentales reveló la existencia de tres factores que representan los aspectos de higiene y condiciones sanitarias, supervisi6n y disciplina, y expresi6n de afecto implicados en el cuidado de niños pequeños. Los resultados obtenidos se discuten en referencia a la literatura existente sobre definiciones de negligencia, y a las implicancias que tiene la construcci6n de definiciones ancladas en la cultura para la investigación y el diseño de intervenciones en esta área. | es-ES |
