This paper presents an analysis of the help-seeking and decisional processes of individuals previous to their engagement in a psychological helping relationship. The analysis is both theoretical and empírica!. The theoretical elements are drawn from models. of help-Se(!king behavior, crisis theory and. the analysis of "patients . socialization ". The empirical data analyzed include information of the first consultation ar¡cl, referrqls, .. as well .as the. res.ults of two qualitative studies; one carried out in Berlin-Germa,ny1 and the other in Sa,ntiago-Chile2. These studies analyzed the perspective of those who are seeking help, and the data were collected through personal interviews. The organization of this paper follows the different stages of the help-seeking process. The the structure of these stages is mainly due to the findings of the qualitative empírica[ studies analyzed.En este artículo se presenta un análisis teórico-empírico de los procesos decisionales y de búsqueda previaos al comienzo de una relación de ayuda psicológica. Los elementos teóricos provienen de diversas fuentes, como son los modelos de búsqueda de ayuda, el concepto de crisis y el análisis de "socialización de pacientes". Entre los antecedentes empíricos se incluyen datos sobre primeras consultas y derivaciones, además de los resultados de dos investigaciones cualitativas, una realizada en Berlín-Alemania y otra en Santiago de Chile. Dichos estudios cualitativos recogen la perspectiva de personas que están buscando ayuda, las cuales fueron entrevistadas. La organización del presente trabajo en diferentes etapas de la búsqueda de ayuda y la estructuración interna de cada una de estas etapas está dada primordialmente por los hallazgos de los estudios empíricos cualitativos.
