Abstract
This article reviews different perspectives of analysis that could be applied to the therapeutical process concerning family violence and abuse. It is argued that, although the systemic perspective allows us to analyze violence as an interactional process, there are dimensions of power and role assignments, cultúrally bound, that influence the interactionalpatterns, leading to discrimination and inequality. The systemic perspective is, then, insufficient to understand this kind of problems. Attention on these issues is drawn in order to rethink the therapeutical techniques that may lead to a better understanding ofpatients' motivations and to help therapists to become betterfacilitators of change.
