This article reports the findings of a study about the perception that adolescent women have with respect to the educactional system as an adequate environment to satisfy their need of personal developm.ent. A sample of 45 girls attending 7th and 8th grade, from schools inSantiago belonging to high, medium and low socieconomic status, was selected. The study used a focus group technique to collect information. The results show that students considered as insufficient the space that formal education assigns for personal growth, where students can think about themselves, their relationship with others and their future. The students also expressed their interest in establishing closer relationships with their teachers. Finally, they considered that school currículum should include topics related to their personal growth, such as creativity, communication and social skills.Este artículo presenta los resultados de un estudio acerca de la percepción que adolescentes mujeres tienen respecto del sistema educacional como un ambiente propicio  para satisfacer sus necesidades de desarrollo personal. Se trabajó con una muestra de 45 alumnas que cursaban 7° y 8° año de enseñanza básica en escuelas de nivel socioeconómico alto, medio y bajo de la ciudad de Santiago, utilizando la técnica de grupos focales. Los resultados indican que, en el contexto de la educación formal, el espacio dedicado al desarrollo personal y a la reflexión acerca de sí mismas, de su relación con los otros y del futuro es sentido por los jóvenes como insuficiente. Expresan su interés en establecer relaciones más cercanas a sus profesores. Las alumnas hacen mención  de la necesidad que el currículo escolar considere otras áreas que favorezcan su desarrollo personal, como la creatividad, la comunicación y las habilidades sociales
