The purpose of this article is to establish the prevalence of physical abuse towards children within the Metropolitan region, and the relevant social factors of risk. Results indicate that 12.7% and of children are subjected to serious abuse by their mother and father respectively, and that the most significant variables of risk are those related to the present atmosphere of violence in the family and the previous history of abuse of the mother of the child.El presente estudio tiene por finalidad establecer la prevalencia del maltrato físico hacia los niños en la Región Metropolitana y los factores de riesgo de orden social de mayor relevancia. Los resultados indican que el 12,7% y 10,1 % de los niños es objeto de maltrato grave por parte de su madre y padre respectivamente y las variables de riesgo más significativas son aquéllas relacionadas al clima de violencia actual en la familia y a la historia previa de violencia de la madre del niño.
