This article considers the impact of agricultural modernization and the process of cultural modernity on social gender relations, as these are expressed in private life among seasonal labourers in the fruit producing area of central Chile. This impact was measured by analyzing the following dimensions: patterns of authority in private life, domestic work, outside home activities and social participation, sexuality and partner relation ships. Ninety people of three different generations were interviewed. Among the women, those working for salaries, house-wives, and seasonal workers who are head of households, and among the men, partners of salaried women and of house-wives. Three aspects of the results of this study are developed in this paper: (1) the new and traditional sentiments and arguments with respect to money and to material goods; (2) the most important changes both in practice and representation of some of the aspects studied; and (3) an analysis Of the dynamics of the relationship between salaried female work and authority and its consequences.Este trabajo estudia el impacto de la modernización agraria y la instalación de procesos de modernidad cultural en la configuración de relaciones sociales de género tal como se expresan en la vida privada en temporeros/as de la fruta de la zona central de Chile. Para medir este impacto se analizaron las siguientes dimensiones: patrones de autoridad en la vida privada, trabajo doméstico, espacios extra-domésticos y participación social, sexualidad y relaciones de pareja. Se realizaron 90 entrevistas a mujeres, trabajadoras asalariadas, dueñas de casa y temporeras jefas de hogar, y a hombres, parejas de asalariadas y de dueñas de casa, de tres generaciones distintas. En este artículo se desarrollan tres aspectos de los resultados obtenidos: (1) los sentidos y argumentos nuevos y mantenidos referidos al dinero y a la dimensión material de los bienes; (2) las transformaciones más significativas de representación y prácticas en algunas de las esferas estudiadas; y (3) el análisis de la dinámica de la relación entre trabajo asalariado femenino y autoridad y sus consecuencias.
