In recent years the interest in the subject of adult attachment has increased, in the theoretical as well as in the empirical perspective. Much of this interest has been the assessment of the construct of attachment in this phase of development. This endeavor has generated two traditions or lines of research: one is the tradition of the models of state of mind and the other is the behavioral approach of attachment. Both of these approaches have developed their own systems of classification in categories or dimensions and their own research assessment tools. Through an exhaustive revision of the rise and development of these traditions, the scope of this paper is to describe the main characteristics of these approaches, its advantages and disadvantages, as well as its field of action and application. The authors conclude about the lack of integration of the construct of attachment and the limitations of its measurement and application.En los últimos años se ha incrementado el interés en el apego de adultos, tanto desde una perspectiva teórica como empírica. Parte de este interés ha sido la evaluación del constructo del apego en estas etapas del desarrollo. Esto ha generado dos tradiciones o líneas de investigación, basadas en los modelos representacional y comportamental del apego, con sistemas de clasificación categoriales y/o dimensionales y con instrumentos distintos. A través de una exhaustiva revisión del surgimiento y desarrollo de estas tradiciones se describen sus características principales, sus ventajas y desventajas, así como sus ámbitos de aplicabilidad. Se concluye sobre la falta de unicidad del constructo del apego y se discute sobre los límites de su medición y aplicación.
