| dc.description | Language ideologies are a relevant factor to comprehend the revitalization processes of minoritized languages. In the case of Mapudungun, recent studies have identified several ideologies, mainly among the Mapuche people. The present article is focused on the ideology of linguistic relativity, analysing its features, the groups in which it is present, and the motivations that may be related to the support of this set of beliefs. In the studied discourses, the ideology of linguistic relativity accents the link between language and identity, and reinforces the idea that Mapudungun is indispensable to have a complete knowledge of Mapuche worldview. The ideology has been observed in statements of Mapuche, researchers, and the State. It is suggested that the backing of this ideology may be associated with: (1) an attempt to radicalize the Mapuche/non Mapuche difference in order to promote the acquisition among non-speakers, and emphasize the urge to implement revitalization policies, and/or (2) consolidate a neoliberal multiculturalism as approach to the interethnic conflict through the limitation of the debate to the cultural field. | dc.description | Las ideologías lingüísticas son un factor relevante en los procesos de revitalización de lenguas minorizadas. En el caso del mapudungún, las investigaciones recientes han identificado una serie de ideologías, principalmente entre los mapuches. El presente artículo se concentra en la ideología del relativismo lingüístico, analizando sus características, su presencia en diferentes grupos y las motivaciones que pueden relacionarse a la adscripción a este conjunto de creencias. En los discursos estudiados, la ideología del relativismo acentúa el vínculo lengua-identidad y refuerza la idea de que mapudungún es imprescindible para el conocimiento íntegro de la cosmovisión mapuche. Se constata que esta ideología está presente entre mapuches, la academia y el Estado. Se sugiere que la adscripción a esta ideología puede relacionarse a: (1) un intento de radicalización de la diferencia mapuche/no mapuche con la finalidad de alentar la adquisición entre los no hablantes y enfatizar la urgencia de ejecutar políticas de revitalización, y/o (2) afianzar la consolidación del multiculturalismo neoliberal como aproximación al conflicto interétnico, mediante la acotación del debate al plano cultural.
