dc.description	The Royal Navy’s officer F.C.P. Vereker did like to paint, and he did live on board between 1865 and 1884. Since he was 15 and up to his 34 he travelled through the world engaging in different tasks, as sounding the coasts of Patagonia and Australia, or bombing the port of Fort Jesus, in current Kenya. In most of his destinations, Vereker painted watercolours, and wrote down his impressions about them and the peoples who inhabited there. Almost all of his manuscripts of fine calligraphy and attached small paintings are located at the Royal Geographical Society, in London, and all of them remain unpublished. In this article I do present for the first time Vereker’s double register, visual and textual, of his stay in the South American Pacific archipelagos in early 1879, focusing on his representations of the Kawésqar men, women and territory; they are analysed in the context of the travelogues of the period. I do argue that the singularity of Vereker’s work is meaningful as it does produce a rather nuanced narrative, distant of the barbarizing rush of British authors as Fitz Roy, Cunnigham y Coppinger.	en-US
dc.description	Al oficial de la marina británica F.C.P. Vereker le gustaba pintar y vivió embarcado entre 1865 y 1884. Desde los 15 a los 34 años recorrió el mundo ocupado en tareas muy diversas, como el relevamiento de las costas de Patagonia y Australia y el bombardeo del puerto del Fuerte Jesús, en la actual Kenia. En buena parte de sus destinos pintó acuarelas y escribió sus impresiones sobre ellos y las gentes que los habitaban. La inmensa mayoría de los manuscritos de caligrafía legible y pequeñas pinturas adjuntas se encuentran en la Royal Geographical Society, en Londres, y permanecen inéditos. En este artículo se publica por primera vez el doble registro, visual y textual, que efectuó Vereker durante su estadía en los canales del Pacífico sur americano en 1879, en lo que refiere a sus representaciones del territorio, los hombres y las mujeres kawésqar, y se las analiza en el contexto de otros diarios de viajes del período. Se concluye que la singularidad de la obra de Vereker es significativa en tanto produce una narrativa ponderada, alejada del apresuramiento barbarizador de los autores británicos más conocidos del período, como Fitz Roy, Cunnigham y Coppinger.	es-ES
