Although there is a relatively great amount of bibliography on the Instituto Pedagogico, only very few of the texts build their analysis on the investigation of primary sources. What is more, those texts are not very different from another and usually they are basically descriptive. This article shows that in describing the Instituto Pedagogico they follow a basic script. Furthermore it explores one of the aspects that stand out after investigating primary sources. While it was created in 1889 with the basic purpose of improving the quality of the secondary teachers by giving them both a pedagogic and disciplinar formal education, there were also complementary motivations. It is proposed that the most relevant of these was to create an institution aimed in the first place at the provinces in a centralizing spirit, that is, to homogenize methods and contents at a nationwide level.en-US
