During the nineteenth century, the Chilean state sought to create a state education system that could deliver to the people the necessary tools to function in a modern democratic society. Among these, one of the most important had to do with the ability to read and write. This article aims to investigate the processes of teaching and learning of literacy in primary school occurred in Chile during the nineteenth century. To this end, we analyze historically and pedagogically the main method used for this, the Gradual Reading Method created by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. At the same time, aiming to study the possible learnings that could have caused this method, it also examines this process from approaches of the psychology of education, such as those proposed by Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky.Durante el siglo XIX, el Estado chileno buscó crear un sistema educacional estatal que pudiera entregar a la población las herramientas necesarias para desenvolverse en una sociedad democrática y moderna. Dentro de éstas, una de las más importantes tenía que ver con la capacidad de leer y escribir. El presente artículo pretende indagar en los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje de la lectoescritura ocurrido en la escuela primaria chilena durante el siglo XIX. Para ello, se analiza histórica y pedagógicamente el principal método utilizado, como fue el Método de Lectura Gradual creado por Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. A la vez, en pos de estudiar los posibles aprendizajes que este método pudo haber provocado, se analiza también este proceso desde enfoques propios de la sicología de la educación, como son aquellos propuestos por Jean Piaget y Lev Vygotsky.
