Latin America data reveal an explicit inequity as well as a decreasing social cohesion from which Chile is not released. There is a gap and disruption in the social fabric promoted by both a smaller presence of the state and a stronger role of the market as a regulating agent. Within this framework, youth is the most affected age segment by having their schooling but not their job opportunities increased. This constitutes a challenge for education as a whole and particularly for the Catholic School which, inside this reality, has been summoned to “a deep renovation (…) by means of a courageous and daring missionary drive, so it can become a prophetic option” (Aparecida 337). The text identifies four actions from the School itself to contribute towards the growth of trust required to increase social cohesion and hence strengthen democracy and equality.Los datos de América Latina hablan de una manifiesta inequidad y de una disminución de la cohesión social, de la cual no está liberado Chile. Se presenta una brecha y una ruptura del tejido social, favorecida por la menor presencia del Estado y la primacía del mercado como agente regulador. En este marco, la juventud es el segmento de edad más afectado, al aumentar en escolaridad pero no así en posibilidades laborales. Ello constituye un desafío a la educación en general y con mayor fuerza a la Escuela Católica, que está llamada en esta realidad “a una profunda renovación (...) por medio de un impulso misionero valiente y audaz, de modo que llegue a ser una opción profética” (Aparecida 337). El texto identifica cuatro acciones desde la Escuela para aportar al crecimiento de la confianza, requisito para aumentar la cohesión social y con ello fortalecer la democracia e igualdad.
