| dc.description | This paper addresses the issue associated with the tenant houses located in downtown Santiago. Based on field research, this study identifies new features related to these units: a) this is a latent phenomenon fueled by the presence of a real estate sub-market; b) tenement houses are inhabited by low-income groups that have no access to better housing options and prefer to live in the downtown area rather than in other parts of the city; and c) there are not so many tenement houses and they offer affordable rents, thus becoming a popular rental system that, according to the author of this research, could give rise to a housing policy intended to make up for the housing deficit that affects the country. | en-US |
| dc.description | Se aborda el problema de los conventillos en centro de Santiago, identificando en ellos -de acuerdo a estudios en terreno- características no consideradas anteriormente: a) el conventillo no es un fenómeno habitacional que está desapareciendo en Santiago: se mantiene conformando un submercado de viviendas; b) son habitados por una suerte de grupos cautivos, que no pueden optar a una vivienda mejor por su bajo ingreso y no desean alejarse del centro de la ciudad; c) los conventillos no abundan y el atuendo en ellos es bajo, constituyéndose en un modo de arriendo popular que, según la autora, podría dar lugar a una política de vivienda viable para compensar el déficit habitacional que sufre el país. | es-ES |
